Four regions to discover
Different microclimates and lush vegetation make up the special environment of the yungas or mountain jungles of Jujuy.
Places such as Calilegua National Park, San Francisco, the hot springs of the Jordan River and towns such as Valle Grande, Valle Colorado, Santa Ana and Caspalá are ideal to explore, doing unique trekking in the company of local guides.
This region is represented by wild camelids such as vicuñas and guanaco, rodents such as
chinchillas, mountain vizcacha or “Chinchillones”, and numerous burrowing species such as “Tojo Tojo”,
“Cuises”, etc. As for birds (of the water bodies), this area has a variety of beautiful
species, among which are distinguished flamingos or “parinas”, Andean bustards or “guayatas”, ducks, coots
and herons. Raptors such as condors and eagles predominate in the high peaks. On the margins of lagoons and
flocks of rhea petiso and “suri andino” are frequent in the salt flats.
It is a unique cultural landscape. The people who live there weave together stories and traditions passed down from the deepest origins of their culture, preserving religious beliefs, art, music, agricultural techniques, rituals, and festivals that make this area a living heritage. As a result, in 2003, the Quebrada de Humahuaca was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Site. Descendants of the ancient inhabitants, the Quechua people, still exist there today, coexisting with nature and ancient religious beliefs.
